Using essay formats helps to make your essay more creative and of a good quality
Some students while writing essays pay attention only to the essay ideas and to the content of their research and they aren’t consistent with rules of essay format. But it may happen that your essay format may be crucial in evaluating your work. Sometimes teacher or professor gives definite essay format according to which you should write your essay but if you are free in choice then you have several options of how you can format your essay. There are many essay formats.
One of the essay formats is Harvard. It has the following rules in formatting essay: text style is Times New Roman; text size is 12 points with double spacing. There also standard rules of setting bibliography: if it is a book you shall point out author’s name, the title and year of publication and place where given book was published; if it’s a journal then give the name of author, year when journal was published, name of article after this write name of journal, volume and number of pages.
Another essay formatting style is APA or American Psychological Association. This style is often used by American and Canadian essay writers. According to its format text style Times New Roman and Arial may be used, text size should be 10-12. Each page should be numbered and sometimes your surname is required as a header of all pages. There are also some peculiarities in formatting the title page: in the right hand corner student writes his name under it instructor’s name, the name of the subject and date. Then in the centre of the page there is essay title, any punctuation marks, inverted commas are not allowed in the title.
One more type of essay formats is APA or American Psychological Association. It’s very similar to Harvard and APA. It consists of 4 parts: the title, then the main part of the essay plus abstract or conclusion and the list of bibliography. In cover page student points out his name and name of his instructor, university, in the middle of the page the title of essay. In an abstract student sums up the whole essay besides it should be no more than 120 words. In bibliography first of all should be written the surname of the author then his initials, the name of the book, its publication year and place and, if possible, name of the publisher.
You may also use Chicago type of formatting essay. It’s actually divided into new and old style. In old style the bibliography is pointed out with the note in the research. At the end of the essay paper student should write the name of each book that was cited plus books that weren’t cited but were used for essay content should also be included to the bibliography. According to new Chicago style student should point out in in-text citations the name of the writer and title of the book. Here bibliography is the formatted the same way as in old Chicago style.
So, as you see that there are many types of essay formats and it’s up to student what format he will use while writing his essay.
